The One That (Almost) Got Away

We arrived at the cabin at flood stage, and my first thought getting out of the car and looking at the banks was, "where's the canoe?"

Not here...

Not here...

Assuming it's gone I turn my attention to the rice paddy.

Walking back to the cabin later I see this:

Too much to do getting pumps out to worry about how to get it just yet. But then the wind starts to blow. The canoe starts to drift. I haven't a branch long enough to reach it, I consider the waterskiing tow rope but then a stroke of genius (and a bit of luck) lands this:

Many hours of casting and gently coaxing in the big one has paid off. And a special thanks to Uncle Bart for making strong lures (check out the hook).

Bart's Lures: $3
Fishing Pole with open face reel: $40
A boyhood of bait casting at the cabin (and learning to always beach a boat inside the dike): Priceless
